The Health Benefits of Aloe Vera Juice

Aloe Vera Use Throughout History

Information regarding aloe vera’s use dates back nearly 5,000 years to early Egyptian times. It has since been used both topically and orally. Aloe vera gel, found when you break open the green leafy skin, is often used topically to treat burns, abrasions, psoriasis, and other skin conditions.

In a 2004 study from the U.K., researchers gave people with active ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease, aloe vera gel to drink . After four weeks of drinking aloe vera gel in water twice per day, their symptoms began improving toward remission of ulcerative colitis, compared to those given plain water. No significant negative side effects were experienced due to drinking the aloe vera gel.

What are the most important aloe vera juice benefits everyone should know about?

1. It’s good for digestion. This is the major reason why someone might start incorporating aloe vera juice into their diet, says registered dietitian Melissa Rifkin, RD. “Aloe vera juice helps to maintain the ‘good’ bacteria in your gut to keep your gut flora balanced,” she says. “Having balanced gut bacteria can improve overall digestion and feeling bloated or gassy.” She says it can also be helpful for people who struggle with constipation, since it’s high in fiber and boosts the water content in your intestines—pushing everything through more effectively. But she says that it should be consumed in small portions (no more than two tablespoons a day) because in excess, it could cause diarrhea.

2. It could stabilize blood sugar. “Studies have shown that those with type two diabetes can benefit from drinking aloe vera juice to help control their fasting blood sugar levels,” Rifkin says. It’s been shown to be beneficial to people with pre-diabetes for this same reason, too.

3.  It helps increase collagen production. You might have heard that collagen is the key to looking like you never age. Well, consider pairing your collagen with aloe vera juice. It’s been found to support collagen production, reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

4. Aloe vera is super nutrient dense. Besides its beneficial digestive properties, Rifkin says that aloe vera juice is also full of nutrients. “Aloe vera juice contains several important vitamins and nutrients, such as vitamins B, C, E, and folic acid,” she says. Vitamin B is crucial for brain health, vitamin C keeps the immune system running properly, vitamin E is linked to protecting against cancer, and folic acid lowers the risk of heart disease and stroke. Quite the resume of health benefits, right?

5. It can help prevent ulcers. Rifkin says there’s also evidence that aloe vera can help prevent reoccurring ulcers. “It can prevent gastric ulcers from getting worse, as seen in a study done in 2014, due to its vitamin C content,” she says. (More research is needed on this front, though.)

6. Liver function When it comes to detoxing, healthy liver function is key.

Aloe vera juice is an excellent way to keep your liver healthy. That’s because the liver functions best when the body is adequately nourished and hydrated. Aloe vera juice is ideal for the liver because it’s hydrating and rich in phytonutrients.

7. For clear skin Hydrating aloe vera juice may help reduce the frequency and appearance of acne. It may also help reduce skin conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis. Aloe vera is a rich source of antioxidants and vitamins that may help protect your skin.

The important compounds in aloe vera have also been shown to neutralize the effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, repair your skin from existing UV damage, and help prevent fine lines and wrinkles.

8. Heartburn relief Drinking aloe vera juice may give you relief when heartburn attacks. The compounds present in aloe vera juice help control secretion of acid in your stomach. The effects have even been shown to combat gastric ulcers and keep them from getting larger.

9. Beauty hacks

Keeping aloe vera juice on hand can also be good for a number of beauty and health needs.

Try using it for the following:

  • makeup primer (apply before foundation)
  • makeup remover
  • sunburn soother
  • lightweight moisturizer
  • treatment for irritated scalp (mix in a few drops of peppermint oil)

Aloe vera juice can be purchased online or in most health food markets. When shopping for aloe vera juice, it’s important to consider the quality of the product.

Look for organic, pure, and 100 percent aloe juice. It’s important to drink pure aloe vera juice rather than a blend that has fillers. Read the label carefully.

Dosage recommendations

For a health boost, drink up to 8 ounces of aloe vera juice per day. You can pour it over ice, mix it in with your smoothie or favorite juice, or just drink it from the bottle.
